Ziploc Big Bags4 out of 4 stars

Ziploc Big Bags - This season’s plastic, fantastic hurricane accessory (4 out of 4 stars)

On a trip home to Philadelphia to celebrate my birthday, I had the dilemma of transporting 4 bottles of wine in an airplane. I had one suitcase, and one carry-on that could not contain liquids (a la TSA). I could just picture the wine bottles breaking or leaking all over my favorite AC/DC t-shirt. Then came Mom as always to the rescue. She handed me the largest Ziploc bag I had ever seen. How large? I’m talking a 2′x2.7′ bag - now that could hold one heck of a sandwich. I zipped-up the bottles in the bag, and said my last goodbyes to the vino. What do you know, they arrived safe and sound in Florida.

Now, what does this have to do with hurricane preparedness? In addition to holding bottles of wine, Scooby Doo-sized sandwiches and sporting equipment (as pictured on the box), a Ziploc Big Bag is the perfect product for keeping your valuables dry during a hurricane or flood. If you’ve created a OneStorm family hurricane plan, you know that we emphasize keeping a Grab-and-Go folder of important documents. This folder contains your mortgage, bank statements, medical records, and all of the other valuable paperwork behind your life. While a fireproof, waterproof safe/box may be the ideal situation for protecting these documents, it’s not always the most economical or convenient. For just $6.99, you can purchase a box of 5 Large bags (15″x15″) to store your valuables.

Beyond using the bags for important documents, think about storing the family quilt or other keepsakes as well. Think of all of the items boxed in your attic or basement that would be ruined by a flood. Ziploc to the rescue.

I’ve seen the bags for sale at Publix and Lowe’s - two stores that should be on your hurricane checklist - and also online. Get yours today and keep working on that hurricane kit.

Note: I realize the irony of today’s post helping you keep water out, and yesterday’s helping you keep water in!

Get FREEZER bags, they are stronger. Conveniently, 2-gallon bags are the perfect size for files and important papers without having to fold them.
